Chatham-Kent is addressing a spill within the Blenheim Wastewater Treatment Lagoon System.
The municipality said the spill location is contained within the wastewater treatment lagoon system, and immediate steps are being taken to contain, remove, and correct the issue.
The Public Utilities Commission has confirmed that there has been no impact to ground water, and there is no concern for public safety as a result of the spill.
The municipality said environmental consultants and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) have been notified to ensure the appropriate cleanup and corrective actions are completed.
A wastewater treatment lagoon is a large outdoor treatment system where wastewater is cleaned using natural processes, including sunlight, air, and helpful microorganisms, before it is safely released back into the environment.
Further updates will be provided as they become available.
