CK Brushing Off Entrepreneurial Rankings

Economic Development officials say Chatham-Kent has a lot to offer, no matter what a report from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says.

Economic Development Officer Taylor Hughes says a lot of the CFIB report ranking the most entrepreneurial cities sites things like provincial regulations.

“Generally speaking, I would not at all consider us to be at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to being one of the most entrepreneurial cities,” Hughes says. “I think we have a lot to offer in Chatham-Kent, I think you’re really starting to see it a lot more and more now.”

Whitehorse topped the rankings, while CK finished 119 out of 125 cities with an overall score of 46.5 out of 100.

“I think there’s opportunity everywhere you look,” Hughes says. “The CFIB put the report together and there’s a lot of metrics they’ve used to do it, just being in Ontario there’s different things you have to pay for and that hinders us a little bit, at least on the outside looking in.”

The survey used 13 key indicators to identify the state of entrepreneurship, including various demographic measures, earnings, optimism, growth plans, and local tax policy.
