CK Celebrating Local Food Week

Farmers’ Market at the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre, June 4, 2018

Fresh produce is being celebrated in Chatham-Kent this week as part of Local Food Week.

Municipal officials and the Kent Federation of Agriculture hosted a farmers’ market at the Civic Centre this morning to kick off the initiative.

KFA Director Mary Anne Udvari says Chatham-Kent is unique when it comes to food.

“Some people take for granted that we have [lots of produce] in Chatham-Kent, and so many other products that are grown [and made] here. It’s really nice to highlight them and draw attention to our growers and producers that we have right here in Chatham-Kent,” says Udvari.

Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit Dietitian Lyndsay Davidson says there are many benefits to shopping locally.

“One of the biggest things with local food is that when it is ready to be picked and harvested, it’s at its nutritional peak, so you’re able to enjoy not just the amazing flavour that you get when you have food that hasn’t sat on a truck for a long period of time, but you also have higher nutrients,” says Davidson.

Udvari says the KFA is looking into hosting more farmers’ markets in Chatham this summer.
