As the community continues to push back against the proposed York1 landfill project in Dresden, Chatham-Kent will be holding a public meeting to provide information and answer questions.

Any interested residents are invited to attend the information meeting for an update on the Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s actions to fight against the redevelopment of a dormant landfill on Irish School Road. The meeting will be held at the Ken Houston Agricultural Centre in Dresden on June 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

While there have not been any major developments, the municipality said it will provide details on its ongoing advocacy efforts with provincial officials and the limited information that has been received to date from York1 Waste Solutions regarding its proposed project.

Residents are asked to submit any questions ahead of the meeting through the Let’s Talk Chatham-Kent website, to allow municipal staff adequate time to research and prepare detailed responses. The deadline for question submissions is June 19.

Staff will also be available to speak with residents one-on-one following the formal presentation.

Chatham-Kent is currently involved in a legal battle with York1 over the landfill site.

Municipal officials maintain that York1 requires land use planning approvals from CK Council, including zoning and official plan changes, to move forward with its planned waste disposal and regenerative recycling facility at the Irish School Road site.

York1 disagrees and has filed a court challenge in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

The proposed landfill has faced fierce opposition from Dresden residents, the municipality, environmental groups, and provincial opposition parties.
