Local residents are being encouraged to think green when disposing of food and other organic waste.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has launched a backyard composter program to help reduce the amount of garbage heading to the landfill.

Residents can purchase a subsidized backyard composter for $20 to turn food scraps and yard materials into nutrient-rich soil, reducing garbage and creating a useful product for gardening.

Composter bins can be picked up at municipal service centres, including the Wallaceburg Municipal Office and the Civic Centre in Chatham, or by calling the municipality’s customer service line at 311.

The backyard composter program is the first step in an overall organic waste diversion program. Municipal officials are hoping to have a standardized curbside leaf and yard waste collection program up and running next year, followed by a depot food waste digester pilot program in 2028.
