A Chatham physician has been recognized for her commitment and dedication to family medicine.

Dr. Alexandra Ferrara has been named the recipient of the prestigious Leonora Sheppard Award in Family Medicine from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

This award recognizes a Family Medicine resident who demonstrates outstanding clinical excellence and is designed for those planning to build their medical practice in Ontario following the completion of their residency program.

“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Ferrara for earning this meaningful recognition,” said Dr. Lindsey Sutherland, Chatham-Kent Regional Academic Director, Distributed Education at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in a news release.  “She is highly deserving of this award, and her passion for supporting local health care makes her an exceptional asset to our community and the broader provincial health care system as a whole.”

“Being recognized for my commitment to comprehensive community Family Medicine is an absolute honour,” Dr. Ferrara said. “I am truly excited to continue practicing in Ontario and look forward to supporting the health and well-being of our communities as I transition into my full-time practice.”

Dr. Ferrara, who was born and raised in Chatham, earned her Bachelor of Science from Western University and a Master of Public Health from Brock University before completing her medical degree at the University of Limerick in Ireland.

She said she plans to open her own family medicine practice in Chatham-Kent, with additional details to be released in the near future.
