CK Promoting Secondary Dwellings to Increase Affordable Housing Options

Increased home prices and decreased vacancy rates for rental units in Chatham-Kent has many looking for other options.

Municipal officials are trying to promote the idea of creating secondary dwellings, classified as separate living quarters located within a primary dwelling or a building ancillary to the primary dwelling with water and sewer services provided.

Officials say secondary dwellings or garden suites can be used as rental income for property owners, independent housing for family or friends who may need extra care, or affordable and additional housing.

Those who set up a secondary dwelling where allowed under the zoning bylaw, could receive a grant of $2500.
