As smoke from northern wildfires continues to linger over southwestern Ontario, officials with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent are offering temporary relief to those who need a safe indoor space.
The upstairs hall and lobby at Thames Campus Arena will be open Friday from 6am through to 11pm.
As well, Chatham Hope Haven will remain open with extended hours through to 10 o’clock Saturday morning.
Chatham Hope Centre, located at 52 Croydon Street, Chatham, will be open from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
“The health and safety of our residents is always a top priority,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff. “We know these smoky conditions can be especially difficult for the unhoused, seniors, young children, and others who are vulnerable.”
Residents are encouraged to check on family members, friends, neighbours, and others who may be more vulnerable to the effects of poor air quality, ensuring they have access to a clean indoor environment and the supports they may need.
Municipal officials say they will continue to monitor conditions and make service adjustments as necessary to protect the health and safety of residents and staff.
