Officials at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance are celebrating National Physicians Day.

CEO Lori Marshall says it’s an opportunity for local residents to say thanks to those who put our health and wellbeing first.

“We support them whether it’s their family physician, or whether they’ve needed a specialist appointment, or whether they’ve come into the Emergency Department and had to encounter different physicians there,” Marshall says. “I really encourage everyone to take the opportunity to thank their physician. We certainly are so appreciative here at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance of everything that they do to help us to help our community.”

Marshall says it’s also an opportunity to focus on efforts to ease Chatham-Kent’s doctor shortage.

“One of the things that we, as a community, can do is make sure that we’re welcoming when these physicians are coming and having a look at us and see what it is that we offer and what we’re like to live and work in and raise their families in. It’s definitely a whole effort for everyone.”

The Canadian Medical Association selected May first as Physicians Day in honour of Dr. Emily Stowe, the first female physician to practice in Canada.
