The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is being recognized for its excellence in end-of-life care and organ donation.
The hospital received two provincial awards from the Trillium Gift of Life Network for exceeding targets in donor conversion and ensuring families are approached about donation opportunities.
The Provincial Conversion Rate is awarded to hospital partners for reaching a conversation rate that meets or exceeds the provincial target of potential organ donors who went on to become actual donors.
CKHA also earned the Provincial Eligible Approach Rate, awarded to hospital partners for demonstrating leading practices by facilitating a donation discussion with eligible patients or families of patients at end of life.
“This achievement is a direct reflection of the dedication, clinical excellence, and deep compassion shown by our physicians, staff, and health care teams,” said Chief Nursing Executive Natalie Clark in a news release. “Organ and tissue donation relies on unwavering teamwork and sensitivity during life’s most critical moments, and this honor underscores CKHA’s ongoing commitment to honoring donors and supporting their families across our community.”
According to the Trillium Gift of Life Network, there are almost 1700 Ontarians on the transplant waitlist in need of an organ, with thousands more waiting for tissue donations, and only 34 per cent of eligible Ontarians registered as organ and tissue donors.
The Health Alliance is one of 48 hospitals across Ontario honored this year for fostering a strong culture of organ and tissue donation.
