CKHA Receives Health and Safety Award

L-R: Rob Caryn, Workplace Safety and Disability Specialist, Melanie Murphy, Manager, Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness, Lori Marshall, President and CEO, Kevin Shaw, Material Handler and former Chair of CKHA’s Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee, Justin Turkington, Director, Human Resources and Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness.

Some good news for the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance during this pandemic.

The Public Services Health and Safety Association has presented the hospital with an award acknowledging a large drop in injury frequency between 2018 and 2019 with nearly two-third fewer injuries reported.

“PSHSA has presented Chatham-Kent Health Alliance with the 2020 Health and Safety Excellence Award, we achieved a 65% injury frequency reduction.”

Aarssen points out aside from the obvious health benefits, there is a financial component as well.

“The reason it’s really important for us is because we get rewarded through rebates on our workers’ safety insurance premiums,” Aarssen says. “Our WSIB premiums go down the better we do.”

Aarssen says this is a key thing for the CKHA as safety is a core value.
