Classes Resume at WDSS After Alleged Bomb Threat

An arrest has been made after a threatening note sent students and staff at Wallaceburg District Secondary School into lockdown on Friday.

A threatening message was allegedly posted to social media, prompting the evacuation of staff and students shortly after 1 o’clock Friday afternoon.

Once it was deemed safe, police and school staff carried out a detailed search of the building with no explosives found.

Chatham-Kent Police say a suspect was quickly identified and arrested. The youth was released with a future court date.

Both police and school officials are trying to reassure school and community members there is no threat to public safety.

“We recognize that learning about this potential threat may have caused some uncertainty or is a stressful experience for students,” WDSS Principal Melissa Mallette said in a written statement. “We are encouraging students to reach out to a trusted staff member to share their thoughts and concerns.”

LKDSB staff members will be available at the school today to offer counselling supports, as needed.
