Closed Circuit Security Cameras in Downtown Chatham

Chatham-Kent police have been given the green light to set up a surveillance camera pilot project in downtown Chatham.

The first phase of the closed circuit television project will include six cameras, which is estimated to cost in the neighbourhood of $60,000 to $80,000.

Chief Gary Conn says the camera project is based on other Ontario cities that have successfully installed cameras to enhance the safety of downtown cores.

After the first phase is complete in a year, statistical crime and calls for service analysis will be
completed to review data and report to the police services board and council on results.

A decision will be made at the time on whether to expand the project to other Chatham-Kent downtowns, including Wallaceburg.
