Colby Warns Residents To Stay Vigilant

Chatham-Kent’s top doctor is warning against complacency when it comes to COVID-19.

The municipality has just one active case of the coronavirus, but Chief Medical Officer Dr David Colby says that doesn’t mean we can relax.

“We actually got down to one case before when we had our large surge in cases in the Low German community, and went up to 98 active cases at one point, 96 or 98,” Colby says. “I’m not relaxing, but I’m very glad the number is one, instead of 100.”

Paraphrasing a quote often attributed to Thomas Jefferson, Colby says “the price of peace is eternal vigilance.”

“I don’t relax about this kind of thing because remember that really, all of the cases that we have seen since the beginning of the pandemic, there was a first case to them, and there’s always the potential to get large numbers again. We’ll say on duty and handle whatever comes our way.”

Municipal officials say continued physical distancing, hand hygiene, and masks when required are key to keeping the community safe.
