Ron Coristine points out that while their clients are among the most vulnerable they are not included in the first wave of people to get the vaccine.
Same with the staff at Community Living Chatham-Kent.
Coristine blames the provincial government because he feels they are not in his words “ allocating the vaccines based on the needs of vulnerable populations, but is making the decisions based on institutional categories.”
He points out in a recent study people with Down Syndrome are at a far greater risk of becoming seriously ill from the virus.
In fact he says they are 5 times more likely to be hospitalized, and 10 times more likely to die.
Coristine says they are asking the Ontario government to do the right thing and include these highly vulnerable individuals in the first wave of the vaccinations “regardless of the setting in which they live or work”.
