Chatham-Kent council will consider whether to allow for the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Highway 2 and Merlin Road.
Chatham-Kent administration is recommending the building of a roundabout at the intersection, which is currently a two-way stop.
The intersection is located halfway between Chatham and Tilbury.
Concerns about the safety of the intersection led to Chatham-Kent’s engineering department completing a traffic study for the intersection, followed by an engineering consultant also preparing a report. The consultant report said the roundabout will significantly improve safety of the intersection in comparison to both the existing conditions and the alternative of constructing traffic signals.
The report estimates a roundabout to cost approximately $2.1 million versus $2.9 million for the traffic signals alternative.
If council approves the recommendation for a roundabout, the next step would be contacting the adjacent land owners to negotiate land purchases.
