Council To Consider Flag Motion Tonight

Poppy flag raising in honour of the Royal Canadian Legion at the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre, October 2020.

It’s likely to be a contentious night at the Civic Centre as Chatham-Kent Council considers a motion to limit which flags can fly on municipal property.

Chatham-Kent councillor Rhonda Jubenville wants council to take a look at the policy regarding the flags that fly in front of Chatham-Kent’s Civic Centre and service centres.

Jubenville is bringing in a motion during tonight’s council meeting that the only flags that should fly in front of those buildings are the Canadian flag and the provincial and municipal flags.\

Currently, Chatham-Kent raises flags, representing different organizations and groups under the direction of the mayor’s office.

The motion could be politically charged, as Jubenville said some organizations, groups or movements have not been afforded the opportunity to also have their flag flown.

Other Canadian municipalities have looked at their flag policies, after controversy regarding flying anti-abortion groups’ flags, as well as Pride flags.

Jubenville said to avoid controversy and discrimination, only the three government flags should be flown.
