Councillor Brings Floor-Crossing Debate to CK Council

A local councillor is hoping the municipality will weigh in on the issue of floor crossing on Parliament Hill.

During Monday night’s council meeting, North Kent representative Rhonda Jubenville issued a notice of motion, asking council to send a letter voicing support for by-elections in ridings in which MPs have crossed the floor and joined another political party.

“Unrestricted floor crossings can erode voter trust amid rising political corruption and scandals,” said Jubenville.

“Recent crossings, such as those by Conservative MPs to the Liberals have occurred without the original party straying from its platform raising concerns of opportunism over principle.”

Jubenville believes that voter confirmation should be allowed if the elected member is joining another political party and not choosing to sit as an independent.

The federal Liberal government gained a majority with four conservative MPs crossing the floor and winning three by-elections.

Jubenville wants council to send a letter asking the House of Commons to amend the Parliament of Canada Act to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office, all Ontario municipalities, and MP Dave Epp.

Council will vote on the motion at their next meeting on April 27.
