September 3, 1999 began like any other day, but for those travelling on the 401 between Chatham and Windsor, it quickly descended into chaos.
Around 8 o’clock that morning, a patch of extremely dense fog covered the highway near Manning Road, reducing visibility to less than a metre.
A transport slowed down suddenly, setting off a fiery chain reaction crash that involved a total of 87 vehicles.
In the end, eight people were killed and 45 others hurt.
A number of safety measure have come into effect since that tragic crash, including widening of the highway and adding rumble strips to the shoulders.
