Dangerous Driving Charge Laid Following Police Chase

Charges have been laid after a driver led police on a dangerous chase in Chatham that ended in a collision.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers attempted to stop a silver Honda Civic on Wednesday at around 7:30 p.m. on St. Clair Street, after an automatic license plate reader flagged its license plates for being registered to another vehicle.

The Honda failed to stop and attempted to evade police by failing to stop at intersections and red lights. The vehicle nearly collided with other motorists before crashing into a hydro pole.

Three people ran from the vehicle but were apprehended following a short pursuit.

As a result, a 21-year-old Chatham man is now charged with dangerous driving, flight from police, failing to remain at the scene of a collision, using a plate not authorized for a vehicle, and driving without insurance. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The other two suspects, a 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old man from Chatham, were detained but police have not indicated if they face any charges.
