Decline in Ontario COVID Cases Could Mean Good News for CKHA

As COVID numbers across the province begins to dip, life at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance could soon return to normal.

CEO Lori Marshall says while we’re not in the clear quite yet, there’s been a decline in provincial numbers in terms of ICU occupancy.

“We call that a lagging indicator, so you start to see the overall cases out in the province in the general public decline, then you start to see hospitalizations go down, and then the last thing that comes down is ICU admissions, and we’re starting to see that now.”

As a result, Marshall says the hospital isn’t expecting any more patients being transferred in from COVID hotspots around the GTA.

“The best news of all for those patients who’ve had to move across the province. What that also signals is that likely in the near future, we’re going to her about our ability resuming some of the services that have been on hold while we’ve been in that situation.”

The ICU at the Health Alliance currently sits at 60% capacity, while beds in the medical, surgical, and critical care units just over 80% full.
