Distracted Driving Week Underway In Ontario

The OPP will be holding distracted driving week across the province beginning on Monday.

It coincides with March Break as they try again to let the public know what a dangerous practice it is.

Just last year 55 deaths were attributed to distracted driving and over 9,000 accidents.

They laid over 13,500 charges and now the charges will cost drivers a lot more since the changes on January 1st.

The new penalties include a fine increase to 1,000 dollars, 3 demerit points and a 3 day license suspension.

The penalties increase for each offence.

While distracted driving usually applies to the use of hand held devices it also applies to eating and any other activity that takes your attention away from the road.
