Nearly 200 charges have been laid following a police enforcement blitz on provincial highways.
During Operation Safe Driver Week between July 13-19, officers with the Ontario Provincial Police Elgin Detachment focused on poor driving behaviour.
A total of 161 provincial offence charges were laid on highways in Chatham-Kent and Elgin County for speeding, distracted driving and not wearing a seatbelt. Another 15 charges were laid against commercial vehicle operators.
The week-long safety initiative was led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.
According to the OPP, around 20 percent of fatal collisions on OPP-patrolled roads last year involved a commercial motor vehicle.
