Dragon Boat Festival Returning To The Sydenham This Summer

An annual event in support of breast cancer survivors will finally mark its second decade in Chatham-Kent following a two-year hiatus.

The 20th annual Sydenham Challenge Dragon Boat Festival will grace the waters of the Sydenham River on August 20. The event, which is typically held on the first Saturday in June, has been repeatedly postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Many changes have taken place with the festival. By the time public health started lifting restrictions, it became apparent that the typical festival date in June was impossible and in fact, at that time we just weren’t sure a festival would even happen in 2022,” festival organizers said in an emailed statement. “Recently everything started coming together allowing us to move forward.”

With only eight weeks until the event, organizers said they are on a bit of a tight timeline, but they remain confident it can be accomplished.

Organizers have now opened registration for dragon boat teams to register. All teams must have a complement of 20 paddlers and one drummer. Each team must also have a minimum of eight female paddlers. The registration fee is $600 per team.

Those interested in participating are asked to email the organizers at btage@bell.net with your contact information and the name of your team.

Registration closes on July 20.

Dragon boat racing has become an empowering and life-affirming sport for breast cancer survivors that also promotes awareness and quality of life.
