Drivers Asked To Share The Road Ahead Of Enforcement Campaign

Provincial police are asking drivers of commercial and passenger vehicles to share the road as law enforcement agencies kick off an enforcement campaign.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, 31 people have died in collisions on provincial roads so far this year.  Of those, 20 per cent involved transport trucks.

“Aggressive and careless drivers have no place on our roads, especially when sharing the road involves large commercial vehicles. Tragically, many families again this year are paying a devastating price – the senseless, preventable loss of their loved ones – because of drivers who make a conscious decision to not share our roads safely,” said OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique in a news release.

Authorities said speeding, following too closely and improper passing are among the causes of transport truck-involved collisions each year.

During Operation Safe Driver Week from July 7-13, the OPP will be on the lookout for the drivers of commercial and non-commercial vehicles engaging in risky behaviour. The OPP and Ministry of Transportation will also ensure commercial drivers are keeping their trucks, equipment, loads and records up to the standards required by law.
