Charges have been laid after a Chatham resident was awakened by an intoxicated woman who had broken into their home.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were called to the Chatham home on Monday shortly before 3 a.m. for a break-and-enter in progress.

According to authorities, a woman had forced her way into the home while the homeowner was asleep. The homeowner woke to find the woman in the home and attempted to force them out. While they were successful in removing the intruder, they were assaulted in the process.

Officers arrived and located a suspect nearby who was arrested. A 32-year-old Chatham woman is now charged with break-and-enter and assault. She was later released with a court date scheduled in July.
