Artist Talk and Unveiling of Bernie Hrytzak’s Ukrainian Commission

CK artist Bernie Hrytzak will unveil his recently completed commission for a Ukrainian Culture Museum on Thursday April 7th at ARTspace. The talk will begin at 7:00 pm at ARTspace located at 165 ½ King St West in Chatham.
Widely recognized for his artistry and skills with woodturning, Hrytzak was commissioned by the Musée Ukraina in Saskatoon to design and create a one-of-a-kind book cover to feature in their museum. The panels for the front and back of this incredible bookbinding feature Ukrainian cultural motifs and are constructed out of intricate layers of figured veneers and brightly coloured abalone.
The design phase of this work began in October of last year and the piece is now completed. The commission will be on its way to Saskatchewan soon. Before it does, the artist has kindly agreed to present it to an audience here in CK. Hrytzak will speak about the rich tradition of Ukrainian design and how this work will help protect and support the legacy of this influential culture in Canada even as it is under threat in Europe.
The talk will occur at ARTspace Thursday, April 7, starting at 7:00 pm. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. All are welcome to attend this free family-friendly event.
ARTspace is located at 165½ King Street West in downtown Chatham and is open from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm Wednesday through Saturday.
