Old Man Winter has tightened his icy grip on southwestern Ontario, with an extreme cold warning still in effect this morning.
Overnight temperatures plunged to nearly -20 Celsius, and the wind chill making it feel more like -30 or colder at times.
Environment Canada says the deep freeze will continue through to tomorrow morning.
Officials say it’s important to cover up when going outdoors as frostbite can develop on exposed skin within minutes.
Meantime, officials with the Ontario SPCA remind pet owners that if you’re cold, so is your pet.
Animal Cruelty Agent Nicole King with the Sarnia SPCA says protecting your pet means more than just putting a coat on them.
“The best thing for any pet right now is to have adequate shelter,” King says. “Anywhere from domestics, cats and dogs, should be in your house, or farm animals should have adequate shelter outside, a lean-to, a barn, any of those things right now would be most appropriate for this weather.”
If you suspect an animal has been left out in the cold and needs help, you can call 310-SPCA (310-7722, no area code necessary) or 519-384-3647.
