Fake Bills, Real Problem

Local authorities are asking area businesses to be on the lookout for some phony currency making the rounds.

Crime Stoppers spokesman Dave Bakker says two counterfeit $100 bills turned up at one store over the weekend.

“The fake bills are replicas of the 1969-1979 scenes of Canada series. They Began appearing in 2017 in London, Sarnia and Chatham,” says Bakker.  “They’re interesting old style money that we don’t see anymore, but if you’re a clerk and are presented one, you should be suspicious.”

Bakker says the bills look and feel authentic, but when closely examined they are missing the security features. As well, when they get wet the ink will run and rub off.

Anyone who comes across suspected counterfeit currency is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
