Prime Minister Trudeau visited the Governor General at Rideau Hall Sunday morning asking her to dissolve parliament.
Canadians head to the polls September 20th, two years earlier than required. The 36 day writ is the shortest possible.
Trudeau is hearing from strategists to call the snap election as he is riding high in the polls and wants to get out of the minority government situation.
The dates have already been set for the leaders debates – the French Language debate will be broadcast September 8th, and the English language debate will air the following night.
The breakdown of seats at the start of the campaign shows the Liberals with 155 seats, the conservatives with 119, the Block with 32, NDP with 24, 5 independents and 2 green party. It takes 170 seats to reach a majority government.
Elections Canada estimates the cost of this election is $60 million.
