Ferry Closure Expected to Impact Businesses

A Marine City business is worried about the sudden closure of the Sombra ferry due to extensive damage last week.

The Bluewater Ferry was closed indefinitely late last week after a sheet of ice collided with the causeway.

Over the weekend, the dock completely washed away.

Officials say it could cost as much as $4-million to repair the damage.

Virginia Ladensack owner of Fisher Baker Packaging & Shipping in Marine City, says her business will likely be affected.

“I’m sure it’s going to affect it quite a bit, at least 50% of our customers come across the ferry,” Ladensack says. “I hate to see that happen, and I hope it’s not nearly as bad as they think it might be.

Ladensack says Fisher Baker will remain open, and Canadian customers can use the Walpole Island ferry to get across the border, when possible.
