Fifth Street Bridge Back on Track

Drivers are less than two months away from being able to cross the Thames using the new Fifth St. Bridge.

Chris Thibert, Manager of Infrastructure Services with Chatham-Kent, says after some delays early on, construction is back on track.

“Things are moving along quite smoothly,” Thibert says. “The bridge will be open to vehicles and pedestrians by the end of June, which (the contractors) are aggressively working toward, they are currently working on the bridge and doing all the required intersection work at King and Fifth.”

After this project is complete, it’s over to the Third St. Bridge for inspections with a rehabilitation planned in the next two years.

“There will be periodic lane restrictions during this detailed inspection that’s going to occur later on this year,” Thibert explains, “and we’ll have more details of that probably mid-to-late summer, once we get a little bit more involved with that project.”

Thibert says repairs on that span should happen in either 2019 or 2020.
