The span was completely blocked off one month ago because of vandalism at the construction site, but Chatham-Kent’s Manager of Infrastructure Services, Chris Thibert, says things are back on track.
“The Fifth Street bridge is open now to two lanes of traffic and well as pedestrian traffic on both sides of the bridge. It’s the same orientation that we had all throughout the winter. The overall bridge width is for three lanes of traffic, but we still have to have that reduction in place because the sidewalk work on the west side of the bridge is still incomplete. That’s going to be wrapping up in the next few weeks,” says Thibert.
Thibert says they’re scheduled to have all of the work done by June 12th, as long as the weather holds up.
“There is still a lot of weather-related aspects of the project that are still remaining like the remaining asphalt work and the remaining concrete work for the sidewalk – but it is minimal. Just some additional railing work, some work dows on Simcoe Lane below the bridge, which is concrete and asphalt related, as well as removing all the form work and wrapping up, and addressing all the deficiencies of the bridge,” says Thibert.
