A Chatham lottery win is embroiled in controversy.
Earlier this fall, the OLG announced that there were two winning tickets for September 20th 12-million dollar jackpot, one sold in Chatham and the other in Quebec.
The Chatham ticket was purchased by Maurice Thibeault, who at the time was living with his long-time girlfriend Denise Robertson.
Steve Pickard, from the Windsor law firm Colautti Landry Pickard, is representing Robertson.
“She came home and he had emptied his belongings from the house. At the time, she didn’t think much of it, just that he had left and she was upset [about it]”, explains Pickard.
A mutual friend of the couple got in touch with Roberston a few days later.
“On September 28th, she received a call from a mutual friend who let her know that he was claiming he won the lottery, quit his job, and was travelling to Toronto to claim the prize.”, says Pickard.
An injunction has now been placed on the winnings, although according the OLG, all major prizes are subject to a rigorous review process.
