A number of residents at a municipally-owned apartment building have been forced from their homes once again.
Fire crews responded to 99 McNaughton Avenue West shortly after 4 o’clock Thursday afternoon. It’s the same building that suffered a devastating fire in August, 2024, leaving close to 100 residents displaced.
Several tenants were once again evacuated during Thursday’s fire. Officials say crews from Stations 1 and 2 in Chatham were able to contain the flames to a one unit on the building’s second floor.
No injuries were reported.
Emanuel Baptist Church, across the street from the apartment, was opened for evacuees. Displaced residents were given assistance from Housing Services staff and fire administration.
As of Friday morning, municipal officials said residents from 16 units remain out of their homes. Some have been given a room at a local hotel, while others found their own temporary housing.
Chatham-Kent Police are holding the scene, and investigators from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office are expected on site today.
