For the second time in less than a year, fire crews have tackled a fire at a local animal rescue.

Crews were called to Charlotte’s Freedom Farm on Brook Line near Dresden early Sunday morning for a trailer fire. No humans or animals were hurt. Damage is pegged at $15,000.

A fire last July destroyed the organization’s barn, killing 22 animals.

Authorities believe Sunday’s blaze may have been intentionally set. In a social media post, Charlotte’s Freedom Farm says they’ve received threatening letters.

“We never made public a threatening letter found in our mailbox on October 2, 2020,” the post reads “The police advised us not to share that information publicly at that time. The letter contained hate speech, “go away” and “you can rebuild but I will set another fire”. Detectives investigated thoroughly and the case is still open”

Another letter was found the morning of the fire, saying “you were warned” with messages of hate speech.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to help with the investigation.

Anyone who might have information is asked to call Chatham-Kent Police or Crime Stoppers.
