Fire Safety Week

Fire officials are urging all homeowners to make sure they have a plan to escape their homes should the unthinkable happen.

This is Fire Prevention Week, and Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services wants to make sure everybody stays safe and plans ahead.

Public Educator Whitney Burk says they are encouraging families to actually sit down and talk with their families about their fire escape plan.

“We know that fire is extremely fast because of the combustibles we have in our home, we may have less than three minutes to escape,” says Burk. “So practicing and knowing the best ways out of our homes is what we are recommending to everyone.”

Burk says having working smoke alarms and other preventative measures also goes a long way.
