FireFest Blazing Back for a Sixth Year

Plans are coming together for the sixth annual FireFest in Chatham.

FireFest organizer Brent DeNure.

Organizer Brent DeNure says they have some pretty cool features this year, including Ecto1, the Ghostbusters car.

“We’ve been working on this for a few years now, it’s a very tricky vehicle to get,” DeNure says. “We’ve also got fire fighters on stilts, Stan the Magical Fireman who will do magic and storytelling to give kids some safety tips in a non-threatening way.”

Other events on Saturday, September 23rd include a pair of speakers, one focusing on the Detroit riots of 1967, and a fire fighter who rescued the sole survivor from Flight 255 that crashed shortly after takeoff from the Detroit airport 30 years ago.

The parade of antique fire trucks will kick off at four o’clock

DeNure says it’s shaping up to be the biggest year yet.

“It’s growing in leaps and bounds, even last yer when we got rained out we had kids dancing and playing in the rain and it was still well attended,” DeNure says. “We’re expecting 15-thousand people or so, usually they say 6000 at a time, times two or three with turnover.”

You can see the full schedule of events on the FireFest website.
