A Chatham-Kent firefighter has been honoured for his selfless actions, which helped to save the life of a local teenager.
While off duty on April 13, firefighter Brodie McDonald was driving along W Bothwell Road near Bothwell with his family when he witnessed an ATV collide head-on with a truck.
The 15-year-old youth who was driving the ATV was thrown roughly 60 feet from the crash, suffering traumatic injuries, including a broken spine and a broken collarbone.
“Firefighter McDonald, with no thought for himself, immediately left his vehicle so that his wife and children wouldn’t be exposed to the scene and went directly to the young person’s aid,” said Fire Chief Chris Case.
McDonald helped to stabilize the injuries, called 911, and continued to assist the best he could once emergency services arrived at the scene.
“Without the tools or equipment we normally carry as part of our duties, firefighter McDonald exhibited exceptional moral courage and was able to ensure that this young person’s life was saved,” said Case.
Surrounded by family, McDonald was recognized by Chatham-Kent Council and members of municipal administration during Monday’s council meeting.
