A major change in education policy in Ontario.

The Ford government is doing away with academic streaming in grade 9.

The practice was described today by Education Minister Steven Lecce as a “systemic, racist, and discriminatory practice.”

The streaming has students decide if they want to pursue an academic or applied academic path.

Studies have shown it can disproportionately effect black and low income students when it comes to grad rates and post secondary opportunities.

53 per cent of black students were on an academic path compared to 81 per cent of white students.

Lecce also announced a ban on suspending students in junior kindergarten to grade 3.
