Thanks to the keen eye of an off-duty police officer, a quantity of illicit drugs has been taken off the street.

After police received an automatic license plate reader alert for a vehicle that was reported as stolen from Walpole Island, an off-duty Chatham-Kent police officer recognized the vehicle at a convenience store in Tilbury on January 28.

The officer immediately contacted police dispatch and the vehicle was quickly located again by a passing officer on Grand River Line. Police officers followed and eventually cornered the vehicle in a private driveway on Winterline Road.

During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered and seized 39.1 grams of purple fentanyl.

As a result, two women from Wallaceburg aged 30 and 42, a 38-year-old man from Wallaceburg and a 40-year-old Windsor were all arrested. The suspects are all charged with one count each of possession of property obtained by crime, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of a controlled substance.

They were taken to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
