Free Fishing With Mom This Weekend

While many moms may be expecting flowers this Mother’s Day, provincial officials are hoping some may want to celebrate motherhood with rods and reels.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry will be waiving the need for fishing licenses on Saturday and Sunday.

“Free fishing is a great way to get out as a family to celebrate Mother’s Day and enjoy our beautiful lakes, rivers and streams,” said Graydon Smith, the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, in a news release. “Whether you’re new to fishing or have been doing it for years, what better way to kick off the spring season than enjoying fishing with family or friends.”

This is one of four times throughout the year when Canadian residents can fish without a license, including the weekends of Family Day, Father’s Day, and during Family Fishing Week from June 29 to July 7.

During these times, all conservation license catch limits, size limits, sanctuaries and other regulations will still apply.

Residents taking part in free fishing periods will need to carry federal or provincial identification showing their name and date of birth.
