Fundraiser To Support Animal Shelter Operations

Chatham-Kent’s animal control provider has launched a fundraising campaign to help support its daily operations and replenish its emergency medical fund.

Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAW Rescue) is running its third annual Under One Roof campaign from November 27 to December 25.

On average, PAW Rescue said it takes in around 3,000 animals a year.

“We are seeing more abandoned and surrendered animals, with longer stays as we experience a decrease in the number of adopters,” said Operations Manager Myriam Armstrong in a news release. “This perfect storm has resulted in increased costs for food and medical care, which is putting strain on our operations.”

While PAWR has a contract with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to provide animal control services and bylaw enforcement, officials with the shelter said those funds don’t cover their overall monthly costs.

During an average month, PAWR said the shelter’s operational costs are around $115,000. Of that, around $20,000 is spent on veterinary care each month.
