Fundraising Begins for Dresden’s Rainbow Crosswalk

Fundraising is underway for a new rainbow crosswalk in Dresden.

The project was given the green light by Chatham-Kent Council last month, with Dresden Community Care Group and CK Pride vowing to raise the necessary funds.

“We just got together with a few friends and decided we wanted to make Dresden a little more inclusive and brighten up the downtown and make sure everybody feels welcome,” said founder Miriam Armstrong.

In the motion to council last month, the groups involved said that the crosswalk will represent a clear and visible sign of the community’s support towards LGBTQ individuals, their families and allies.

It’s expected to cost $8000 to get the rainbow crosswalk in place.

“So far we have a raffle going on, only 500 tickets available to win two beach cruiser bikes that are provided by Smith Cycle in Chatham,” Armstrong explained. “You can get tickets at different events we’re going to have until the draw in late November.”

Tickets can also be purchased through the Dresden Community Care Group at dresdenccg@gmail.com.

The crosswalk will be located at the intersection of Main and St George, although at this point there’s no specific timeline for the project.
