A gas leak that forced the evacuation of several homes in south-east Chatham is now being repaired.
Chatham-Kent emergency services responded to a gas leak on Scane Street in Chatham after gas was reported venting from a lawn in the area late Tuesday morning.
As a precaution, all homes on Scane Street and a portion of Foster Street were evacuated, with residents sheltering at the WISH Centre. All residents have since been permitted to return home
Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue and the Chatham-Kent Police Service remain at the scene alongside Enbridge crews, who have stopped the gas leak.
Fire officials said the leak was caused by a loose connection underground, and repairs to the gas line are now underway.
There is no immediate danger to the public at this time, municipal officials said.
