Generous Community Supports Local Food Bank

A local service organization has collected thousands of pounds of food to support those in need throughout Chatham-Kent.

The Knights of Columbus Blessed Sacrament Council #1412 held its spring mega-sized food drive at Food Basics and the Real Canadian Super Store in Chatham on April 3-5 to help fill the shelves at the Salvation Army Chatham-Kent Ministries Food Bank.

Volunteers at both grocery stores provided shoppers with a list of much-needed food supplies, which were then donated.

The three-day event brought in over 20,000 pounds of food and hygiene items, filling 331 banana boxes. Another $5,762 was also raised through Salvation Army Red Kettle donations, which were converted to grocery store gift cards for the food bank.

The Knights of Columbus said the group intends to hold its next mega-sized food drive and fundraiser in September, which will again benefit the Salvation Army Chatham-Kent Ministries Food Bank.
