Through a partnership with a local business, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent is supersizing a classic board game to promote strategy and fun in the community.

The municipality said it will be installing a human-size chess and checker set in Wallaceburg, with a second set slated for installation in another location in Chatham-Kent that has yet to be determined.

“This set is a fantastic addition to our community. It provides an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together, have fun, and create new connections,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff in a news release. “This is an excellent example of how a small initiative can have a big impact on our community, and I am excited to see the positive impact this program will have on our residents.”

The exact location for the Wallaceburg chess set has not yet been announced, but the municipality said it will be placed in a central location that is accessible to everyone.

New Rubber Technologies of Tilbury is collaborating with the municipality on the project and will be donating the squares for the chessboard.

“By installing these giant chess sets, we aim to create a space where people of all ages and backgrounds can gather, enjoy the outdoors, and participate in a timeless game that transcends generations,” said Greg Gawne, president and general manager of New Rubber Technologies.

The remaining costs for the project will be paid for through the mayor’s portion of the Councillor Ward Fund Program.

Further announcements on the project, including an official unveiling, are expected in the near future, Canniff said.
