Grass Clippings Causing Issues

Chatham-Kent council will be discussing a bylaw Monday night prohibiting the dumping of lawn and yard waste in local waterways.

Wallaceburg rep Carmen McGregor is bringing the motion forward, highlighting the increased algae blooms and contamination caused by such practices.

By dumping grass and other material over the banks, a covering of organics often occurs.

This covering smothers the natural vegetation that is holding the bank together and protecting it against erosion during high flows.

Erosion can often be seen where dumping has continued over ta number of years.

McGregor wants to see a report brought back at the August meeting for voting and discussion.
