Grocery Store Theft Leads To Charges

While the price of groceries may be going up, a Chatham man had to find out the hard way that it’s still not okay to steal.

On Tuesday evening, officers were called to the Real Canadian Super Store at 791 St. Clair Street in Chatham, after a customer was seen putting $800 worth of items in a shopping cart and exiting the store without making an attempt to pay.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said a suspect was identified through the store’s video surveillance and he was arrested nearby.

A 44-year-old Chatham man is now charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime. He has been released with a future court date on March 25.
