Habitat Breaks Ground in Blenheim

Work is underway on the latest Habitat for Humanity build in Chatham-Kent. habitat-blenheim-family

A ground-breaking ceremony was held in Blenheim yesterday to prepare for work to begin on the agency’s fourth home in the municipality.

Executive Director Nancy McDowell says the family will contribute about 500 hours to help.

“There’s a sense of pride in building your own home, there’s also a sense of commitment in your community,” McDowell says. “The family has to qualify financially because they’re not given this house, they have to purchase it.”

Habitat families aren’t required to make a down-payment on their home, there’s no interest paid on the mortgage, and it’s geared to income.

The home is expected to take about four month to complete, but as with any construction project, the timeline is weather-dependent.
